The Hype on Bone Broth

When I think of bone broth I think of the soup my parents made almost everyday growing up. We would have it with my moms delicious brown rice filled with a variety of beans, a colorful salad, and a protein of some sort, usually grilled fish. What's funny is I didn't even realize how healthy the soup was until recently. Not only does it taste delicious, it's rich in minerals and collagen that heal your gut/immune system, and reduces inflammation!

My parents would make variations of this broth, but my favorite way was always filled with Asian veggies like bok Choy, Garland Chrysanthemum, or napa cabbage. We would flavor the broth with ginger, a little salt and sesame oil. Simple but the most comforting of flavors. Now-a-days it’s easy to buy a seasoning square, add it to water and voila your broth is ready. But buying this fake broth actually causes us to miss out on a ton of benefits that a traditionally made broth offers and is usually filled with preservatives. Bye

The big seller of homemade bone broth is the collagen. Collagen is a protein that is found in bones, blood vessels, skin and organ tissues. The collagen protein molecule is designed to provide elasticity aka healthy and youthful looking skin.  During the simmering process collagen is leached out making it available for us without having to chow down on the bones themselves.

But if our bodies make collagen why would we want to eat it too? Well.. as we get older the amount we can produce decreases causing things like wrinkles and joint deterioration, yikes. As far as foods go, bone broth is a great source of collagen buuuut we also get natural collagen from any animal proteins - meat & eggs and even some vegetables and fruits!

I make my broth the way my parents make it - buying a whole organic pasture raised chicken, making meals using the meat, and tossing the bones into a pot filled with water. I cook it on high until it boils, remove the foam at the top, and then I add a ton of flavor enhacing veggies like onion, celery, bok choy, and ginger and simmer it until the veggies are soft. Ginger is soooo good in this soup I can't even begin to tell you.

Before serving, I sprinkle salt to taste and add a dash of sesame oil. I usually top it with sliced green onion too for added flavor, and there you have it!

THE TAKEAWAY: Having a sufficient collagen intake provides us with a TON of benefits inside and out. Collagen supports healthy skin, high energy and a healthy immune system.

I also started taking in more collagen from Vital Proteins to amp up my intake after hearing nothing but rave reviews. I'm using their beef bone broth collagen and using the grass fed and pasture raised collagen peptides in my smoothies too! Don't worry they don't taste like soup, they don't really have a flavor at all - although I know they have some flavored products too :) (Not sponsored by vital proteins)

Let me know if you guys have ever made bone broth before or if you are thinking of trying it! It's the one soup I think of having when I get home from travels or when I want to snuggle up on the couch and watch Netflix. I love it so so much!

Until next time~
