All About HōmeBodies: A Workout Program Designed for YOU

Heeeey, Remi here!

Today, I want to tell you all about HōmeBodies! It’s the one-of-a-kind at-home workout program that my boyfriend, Nate and I put together the day the governor of California closed gyms due to COVID-19! We actually kind of fell into it, but more on that later.

Here’s what you need to know: You can work out at home with minimal equipment, you won’t get bored, and the consistency will bring you incredible results!

If you dread the thought of working out, feel like you’ve lost motivation, and are constantly falling off the “workout wagon,” then you’re in the right place! Working out shouldn’t feel like you have to do mental backflips just to start. You should feel like you’re craving more and excited!

I’ve been looking forward to sharing this post with you because I love everyone in the  HōmeBodies, Novak fam community SO SO  much. I’m still in awe of how it went from a “let’s encourage people to stay fit through quarantine by sharing IG workouts” into a full-out program that’s changing people’s lives for the better! 

So, stick with me today, and you’ll learn some fun facts about us, what makes HōmeBodies so unique, and the incredible community that was born from our desire to make at-home fitness fun, easy, and worth it (aka get REAL results)!

A Little More About Me!!

I actually started as a breakfast bowl blogger, which turned into a full-on love affair with healthy living and evolved into me being a full-time lifestyle, health, and wellness blogger. Along the way, I became a IIN Health Coach, which means I’m certified to help people pursue holistic health and nutrition in a way that integrates with their lifestyle. You could say that once I started learning about healthy living, I couldn't get enough!

Confession: Even though I LOVE all things healthy and good for you, if there was a “gets bored and quits workout programs” competition, I would be the winner. I just hate doing the same thing over and over again. So, if no one is yelling and motivating me to do the workout, I’ll skip it. One day off turns into three days off, and before I know it, I’ve been paying for a workout program that I haven’t used in months!

So, for any of you who have trouble sticking with workout programs, I feel you. I also have good news for you! Since starting HōmeBodies, I am the fittest, healthiest, and happiest I've ever been. And I’m not just saying that because it’s Nate’s and “ my baby.” HōmeBodies has made an incredible difference in my life and the lives of so many others. That’s why I'm beyond excited to be your biggest cheerleader and sweat alongside you on this journey!

A Little More About Nate!!

Nate, my boyfriend, has allllllll the certifications and education when it comes to working out, including ISSA (International Sports Science Association), NASM (National Academy Sports Medicine), Crossfit Level 1 Coach, and USA Boxing trainer (sheesh). He has boxed at the semi-professional level, raced triathlons, competed as a top-level CrossFit athlete, and won a world fitness championship.

While I have to admit, my boyfriend is pretty impressive, what I love most about partnering with him to create HōmeBodies is his philosophy towards fitness. He approaches every workout with an appreciation of the mind and body that I rarely see in fitness programs. Here’s how he describes his approach:

“I have an insurmountable obsession with what the body and mind are capable of. I have run myself into the ground and, through trial and error, learned how to get results and rehabilitate the body. I've spent the past decade training and coaching in every fitness field imaginable. … I gained a deep knowledge and appreciation for fitness during my time serving in the US Marine Corps as an infantryman. My methodology is deeply rooted in the life or death lessons that I encountered in combat. I motivate people to build unshakable habits and bulletproof bodies that are resilient.” - Nate

Nate’s intense, but don’t get worried about him being too tough on you. I promise he won’t run you into the ground like a military drill sergeant. After all, I work out with him and am doing everything right alongside you! Nate is a great motivator and will remind you to press through when it gets tough, just like a friend who believes you are capable of incredible things. Because you are!

Together, cheerleader me and coach Nate make a great team because we are so incredibly different (Nate is more extreme and I am more balanced) but our commitment to growing and giving our best to changing your life is how we meet in the middle. We love working out together, and we love even more that we get to share this experience with you through HōmeBodies.

How HōmeBodiesGot Started

Believe it or not, HōmeBodies didn't start as HōmeBodies. That’s kinda crazy to think about now, but seriously, the day the governor shutdown gyms in California, Nate and I decided to hop on Instagram and share our workouts with you all. After all, we weren’t the only ones who lost access to their gym, and we figured you might appreciate a little inspiration on how to workout without a gym, too!

Since that day, we’ve been showing up Monday through Sunday at 9:00 AM without fail — rain or shine. The only two days we skipped in three months were when Juno got sick, and Nate worked security until 6:00 AM during the riots. Other than that, we’ve made it so that all our readers had to do was get dressed and turn on Instagram live every day at 9:00 AM.

It was one of the best things we did during the quarantine — connecting through sweat, finding ourselves a new routine, and creating a sense of normalcy during a really scary time.

For the first three months, we only did bodyweight workouts. And right about when we thought we were out of ideas and inspiration for more workouts — BOOM! HōmeBodies was born. This revamped idea led us to make three major changes so that we could bring you the best experience possible!

  1. We incorporated dumbbell movements into bodyweight programming. GAME CHANGER.

  2. We changed platforms to hold our workout videos. Instagram Live crashed a lot when we were using it, there were annoying spammers, and we weren’t allowed to play copyrighted music. With our new platform, we can give you the best we’ve got + better quality video shot horizontally to fit your computer and TV screens.

  3. We started charging a membership fee to ensure quality, accountability, consistency, and community for the program!

In other words, we made it through quarantine, learned a lot, and realized that not only is this something WE love to share with you, but YOU love being a part of, too! So, we made it official. It’s not just a little workout challenge we did on Instagram to stay sane during the lockdown anymore. HōmeBodies is a lifestyle and community for anyone who wants to incorporate fitness into their life for the long run, for their health, and happiness.

What Makes HōmeBodies Unique?

Since launching in early August, we have committed to uploading one brand new, follow along,  1 hour workout every single day. So it’s safe to say HōmeBodies is a boring-free zone! We release seven brand new workouts a week — that’s a new workout EVERY SINGLE DAY. And each workout is created with our in-ear coaching style as Nate guides you through the entire workout, reminding you to have the right form and keep moving. 

Instead of boring repetitive circuits and basic movements, we are always challenging you to move in different ways. Moving in ways that your body isn’t super familiar with gives it no choice but to adapt and get stronger! And it’s honestly more fun and gets your brain fired up. All the workouts each week will fit into one of these three categories:

  1. Low-intensity workouts. These help you connect with your body, release stress, and recover. Remember, if you ever feel like skipping these workouts, they are essential to maintaining strength and improving mobility.

  2. High-intensity workouts. During these workouts, your heart rate will be up, and you’ll be breathing hard. Think lots of sweat and fat burning!

  3. Strength focused workouts. Want to feel the burn? This workout will tone your muscles, build definition, and burn some major calories.

The combination of each of these workouts builds strong lean muscles and burns fat. We target the full body daily — upper body, lower body, and core — so, if you do miss a workout, you won’t feel lopsided! 

Not only do we incorporate a variety of full-body workouts to keep you lean, strong and flexy, but we also approach fitness from a holistic perspective, meaning we take into consideration that you are a person with emotions and commitments and at time and CRAZY life. To help our members create a happier and healthier life we created “The Ten Commandments of HōmeBodies.” It’s a list of ten goals or commitments that take into account your need for rest, fun, and a positive environment. 

The Ten Commandments of HōmeBodies

  • Thou shall not train in pain

  • Let strength be thy foundation

  • Training shall mimic life’s activities

  • Thou shall master the art of the “hinge”

  • Vegetables shall be plentiful in thy diet

  • Thou shall carry heavy things

  • Thou shall train to move quickly and under control

  • Thou shall not neglect mobility

  • Thou shall recover harder than thou train

  • Thou shall remain consistent

All that to say, we’re passionate about helping you get a healthy mindset and lifestyle through these workouts, and we also see and value your humanness. We know first hand that overwhelming emotions and loaded schedules can make working out hard. We also know how fitness can help you deal with the stress of life and create, what Nate would call, a bulletproof mindset, to get through hard things and achieve whatever you want. So, “The Ten Commandments of HōmeBodies” is our way of helping you be emotionally and relationally healthy!
