How I take care of my hair the clean & green way

Hello!

Today I want to talk hair! I’ve been open about how my hair can get really really dry and damaged at times, especially when I'm not taking the best care of it.

You may have noticed on my Instagram that I’ve joined the #LiveRAW Challenge put on by Biolage. I’m really trying to detox from toxic products this year, and the bathroom is where I’m starting. I’ve been on the hunt for products that work as well as the chemical-filled stuff. Lots of clean products don’t work as well for me, but when I found Biolage R.A.W., they were the first hair products that worked so well. I’m super picky about what I use on my hair since it is so temperamental and dry, and the The Biolage R.A.W. products are moisturizing and gentle.

Because of that, I joined the challenge to use clean products on my hair every single day and take steps towards a healthier planet!

The Biolage R.A.W. line has a few different clean options: Nourish, Recover, Uplift and then a replenishing oil misting spray (heaven!). I like to switch up my shampoos (a hairdresser once told me this was great for not weighing down my hair), so I appreciate that I can assess my hair’s mood and choose accordingly. Each are made with natural products and basically add health to your hair rather than chemicals. For as hard as I try to take care of my body and live a healthy lifestyle, it feels good knowing that my hair is receiving the love too.

Above images: After using Biolage R.A.W. Recover Shampoo and Conditioner, I love to use the Replenish Oil-Mist, which is made from 100% natural origin ingredients.

One of my favorite parts of the line are the natural ingredients. It may sound kinda weird, but seeing the real ingredients, like sesame seeds or coconut, has inspired me to try new recipes in the kitchen. I use a lot of seeds in my smoothies, but I hadn’t really messed around with sesame yet, even though they are one of the world’s healthiest foods and I grew up eating them! They can help fight cancer, balance hormones and blood pressure, and are good protection for your heart! I was feeling like creating something new , so I whipped up this black sesame seed smoothie (it’s YUMMY!!).

Sesame Seed Protein Smoothie (inspired by Biolage R.A.W. Uplift Shampoo)

  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds (I found them at Wholefoods)

  • 2 bananas

  • 1/2 cup kefir

  • 1 tbsp flaxseed meal

  • 1 tsp honey

  • scoop of vanilla protein

  • 5 ice cubes

METHOD:

Toast sesame seeds in a small pan over low heat until fragrant- about 3 minutes while stirring frequently. Then chuck it in a food processor and grind the seeds. Blend the rest of the ingredients with the sesame and serve immediately!

Nourishing my body with real food and also treating my hair to the same ingredients feels really good, and it’s something I plan on doing throughout 2017. I challenge you to do the same! Go in your bathroom and find all the products that have toxic ingredients (you can see a full list of the toxins to avoid here), then start replacing with clean products one by one. And try the Biolage R.A.W.! Like I said, I’ve been looking for something for my hair for a while, so I’ve done some of the grunt work for you!
